Longman Cornerstone is a multi-level, intensive English Language learning program specially designed to help English learners master the Texas English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS). Through explicit, intensive, and focused instruction that accelerates students’ language acquisition, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and oral and written communication skills, students will quickly begin achieving greater academic success in their coursework across the curriculum. The reading instruction is designed to improve English learners’ ability to decode and make sense of unfamiliar words as they read course material in different disciplines, so that students are learning to read English as they read English to learn.

Longman Cornerstone blends rigorous, research-based reading and language skills instruction together with a balance of content-area readings and age-appropriate, high-interest literature. In addition, this series incorporates the focused and purposeful instructional principles of Understanding by Design, which allow students to demonstrate their understanding and mastery of skills through multiple formal and informal assessment opportunities. Through this process, students will be equipped with the key transferable skills and strategies necessary for lifelong academic success.

To facilitate and enhance instruction, the clear, easy-to-use lesson plan format in the wraparound Teacher’s Edition provides a straightforward roadmap that guides teachers through each lesson, ensuring explicit and purposeful instruction. The programs also offers a host of teaching resources—including print, audio, video, and electronic materials—which provide a rich array of needs-based reinforcement and support.

Program Organization (Cornerstone K)

Longman Cornerstone Pockets is divided into nine high-interest, theme-based units that build students’ language learning skills, vocabulary base, and familiarity with academic conventions as they progress through the book. It is a student-friendly and effective on-ramp program for students developing their academic skills.

Each unit is organized around a “Big Question” that provides a thematic context for building understanding of key concepts and academic vocabulary.  Within each unit, a special Talk About Texas section contains interesting facts about Texas, which teachers can use to help children appreciate Texas’ history, culture, and natural environment.

The wrap-around Teachers Edition contains step-by-step, teacher-friendly lesson plans along with motivating activities.  Each unit begins with a two-page planner that includes objectives, content connections, learning strategies, materials, oral and written language tips, accommodations for different proficiency levels, and the unit English Language Proficiency Standards focus.

Explicit instruction and tools to monitor student progress are provided in the side columns, while the listed on the page identifies which ELPS are being taught at any point within the lesson.

Program Organization (Cornerstone Grades 3-5)

Longman Cornerstone is divided into six units, with each unit designed to cover six week’s worth of classroom instruction. Each unit is organized around a “Big Question” that provides a thematic context for building understanding of key concepts and academic vocabulary. Three readings per unit develop academic skills logically and systematically in a clear and consistent sequence, while suggestions for related reading (in the Further Reading feature in the Put It All Together section at the end of each chapter) encourage ongoing independent reading practice to help students build reading fluency and confidence.

Within each unit, a special Focus on Texas section includes a reading that focuses on the rich history, culture, literature, and people of Texas and includes ample coverage and practice of language skills. Visual Literacy activities labeled View and Respond help teachers launch each unit by telling them how to use the photos on the opener as conversation prompts, giving students practice using theme-related vocabulary and discussing theme-related content. Unit level concepts are introduced in Build Unit Background and Kids’ Stories from Around the World to expose students to key terms they’ll explore and provides an accessible and appealing context for the learning that follows  Critical key words, academic vocabulary, and phonics/ word study skills are explicitly taught before each reading in the Prepare to Read section, with multiple opportunities for students to practice and apply vocabulary through classroom discussion and workbook activities.

Key reading strategies are explicitly taught in a comprehensible, step-by-step format, ensuring students know when and how to apply the strategies to their reading. As students read, a variety of built-in supports ensure students stay on track.  First, words or phrases that may be unfamiliar to students or have a high Lexile score are highlighted in yellow and defined on the student page, so that they do not interfere with students’ reading.  Also at the bottom of each right-hand page within a reading, a reading Check-Up feature provides built-in progress monitoring.  At the end of each reading, Think It Over and Reading Strategy questions check comprehension and promote discussion of the reading as a whole.

Within each unit, A Closer Look At… photo essay helps students develop visual literacy and builds additional background knowledge about one of the readings.  Consistently following each reading, the Learning Strategies, Grammar, and Writing pages teach specific comprehension and grammar skills that then allow students to practice that skill in a structured writing assignment. As they discuss the Big Question in the Unit Wrap Up the end of each unit, students demonstrate their understanding and mastery of key concepts and their ability to transfer and apply newly acquired skills in a series of unit Projects that range in level of difficulty for built-in Differentiated Instruction.

Each unit culminates in a Put It All Together section, featuring Listening and Speaking Workshops, Writing Workshops, and Fluency practice.  These related assignments provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their mastery of the skills covered in the unit and to apply them in formal academic speaking and writing.  Within each unit, a special Texas Test Preparation section highlights key testing skills and coaches students through how to approach the kinds of test items that they will encounter on high-stakes tests like the TAKS and TELPAS.

Texas Teacher’s Edition

Because Longman Cornerstone was developed specifically to address the Texas ELPS, each standard is introduced, developed, and taught to mastery with frequent opportunities to monitor progress.

The wrap-around Teacher’s Edition features a clear, easy-to-use, step-by-step lesson planner that guides teachers through each part of the lessons. Explicit instruction and tools to monitor student progress are provided in the side columns, while the English Language Proficiency Standards box at the bottom of every left-hand page identifies which ELPS are being taught at any point within the lesson.

At the bottom of the right-hand pages, the Differentiated Instruction boxes provide specific teaching strategies to help teachers tailor instruction to individual learner’s needs. These boxes include strategies to address mixed-ability and mixed-proficiency classrooms, as well as specific strategies for Culturally Responsive Instruction (CRI). In addition, the Accelerate Language Development and Linguistic Note boxes found throughout the Teacher’s Edition highlight potential trouble spots in language development for certain learners and provide built-in scaffolding.
